VCDP for VTX

The essence of VCDP’s purpose is to encourage the fullest possible participation of all Democratic voters. It is dedicated to disseminating the Democratic message, platform, and philosophy. A major source of VCDP’s grassroots organizing is through the service, encouragement, and facilitation of participation in community education and social events. VCDP provides a grassroots forum for the study and discussion of public policy issues and their impact at the local level.

VCDP in the Community: Showing Up, Speaking Out, and Serving Together

At the Victoria County Democratic Party (VCDP), community isn't just a word we use—it’s the foundation of everything we do. We’re proud to represent the people of our county not just at the ballot box, but in the everyday work of building a more just, compassionate, and connected community.

Here’s a quick update on what we’ve been up to recently.

Good Trouble Lives On:
Honoring the Legacy of John Lewis

On July 17th, we hosted a “Good Trouble” event in downtown Victoria, honoring the life and legacy of civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis. Lewis, who served more than three decades in Congress, began his activism as a young leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and was one of the original Freedom Riders. He is perhaps best known for his courageous leadership during the 1965 march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama—a pivotal moment in the fight for voting rights.

Our event featured live music, community camaraderie, and a candlelight walk around DeLeon Plaza - a powerful reminder that standing up for justice can still be joyful, hopeful, and rooted in love. As Lewis famously said, we must continue to “get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”

Supporting Our Food Bank—Because Hunger Can’t Wait

The VCDP Community Service Committee recently organized a volunteer day at the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent. For our assignment, we helped sort and separate fresh produce from California.
But the truth is, our food bank is struggling.

This year, they’ve received 42% less food than at this time last year—even though the need is higher than ever.

We want to shine a light on this issue: food insecurity is real in Victoria County, and it affects working families, children, and seniors every single day. We're committed to continuing our advocacy and support for this essential community resource, and we encourage everyone who can to donate, volunteer, or help spread the word.

Staying Informed and Empowered: Immigration & I.C.E.

At our June General Meeting, attendees heard an excellent presentation on immigration rights and how to respond safely and legally to I.C.E. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) activity. The presentation included legal resources and actionable information—because knowledge is power, and it’s critical to make sure our immigrant neighbors feel safe and supported.

Looking ahead, our July General Meeting will host representatives from the Victoria Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office to discuss how I.C.E. operates in our area. This open forum will give community members the opportunity to ask questions and better understand the local landscape around immigration enforcement.

We believe political engagement doesn’t stop after Election Day. It shows up in how we care for our neighbors, advocate for fairness, and stay informed together. Whether you’re new to activism or have been walking the walk for years, there’s a place for you in this movement.

Join us as we continue to stand up, speak out, and make good trouble right here in Victoria County.

-In Solidarity,
The VCDP
